Abstract

This paper conducts a comparative analysis of the economic and social conditions of women who engage in sex work in the central areas of Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez.

This allows us to study the specific case of women who engage in sexual work and/or sex services. To compare the problems generated by… observing the social, economic conditions of women who perform this activity in the central areas of Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez. It was considered necessary to design a quantitative, cross-sectional study, at a descriptive, correlational and explanatory level, with a non-probabilistic sample of 325 sex workers selected by convenience. Tijuana and Ciudad Juárez and to elucidate the social implications that affect or benefit the well-being of women who perform sex work on both borders.

As a methodological strategy, this population group that works in the central areas of both borders was addressed, with a quantitative methodological approach, which initially allows structuring a sociodemographic profile of these women (labor, economic, social, health conditions and specific needs, among others). The sample was determined with the purpose of ensuring that the test results have a confidence level of 95% with a margin of error of ± 6, which would allow generalizations to be made about this female population aged 18 to 75. The random selection was made considering that the sample had a proportional representation of an average of 1,637 women who work in the central areas of Tijuana (952) and Ciudad Juárez (685) respectively.

For this purpose, descriptive statistics were first generated of the sociodemographic characteristics of sex workers and the prevalence of risk behaviors, to estimate the correlation between risk behaviors and sociodemographic variables. To include the fact that the observations were grouped by city, estimating a model that introduced fixed effects by city and random effects by sex worker. In all cases, the categories were created from the observed distribution of the variables of the two groups. Additionally, three indices were generated: Sociodemographic profile; conditions and environment related to the exercise of sexual services; background in sexual work, activity record.
